Hey guys,
Next on my list is a new set of HID's to replace my stock lights on my Alty. I did a bit of research but not enough to know what exactly I need or what exactly is legal cuz I heard a certain strengh was illegal. Do you guys know what this is? I was looking at 8500K; they are Super White with Bluish Tint which would be sweet. How hard is it to change those bulbs?

3000k = yellow (brightest, most lumens)
4300k = white
5000k = primarily white with a hint of light blue
6000k = light blueish purple hue <- I use these and would not go more purple then that
8000k = purple (ok with projectors)
10000k = rice purple
12000k = ultra super rice purple (least brightest, least lumens, all rice action)

etc

Do these vary by the brand? On an auction I was looking at it said for the 8500k it was bright white with a blueish tint. Check it out! How's the price? Is this normal?

I'm guessing these are just the bulbs and not the kit right? How much would I be looking at if I bought the kit?

The Kelvin colour temperature chart is pretty static... yes some bulb manufactures are slightly different in colour, brightness, and look... but 3000k will always be yellow and 12k will always be ricey purple.  Grin

And 8000k+ on a non projector setup may get you pulled over for looking too bluish purple (it screams I am not stock and am after market, which will then leaving you pulling magic tricks when the cop asks you to show him your high beams... which no longer exist by the way in most generic HID setups).

There are dual bulbs now (half halogen and half xenon) which will still allow your high beams to work.  The only true high/low beam combos only exist in a projector type setup (H4 I believe).

I would also recommend going with a very good brand... HID bulbs are not cheap to replace (about $200 CDN for a pair).

I would highly recommend Phillips... if you can't afford that then go one step down to McCulloch... then go cheaper then that at your own risk (mind you, you can also go more expensive then Phillips if you wish).

Do your research until you fully understand what you want... get what will provide the most light without annoying other drivers, last without needing constant bulb replacements or ballast, and get what will not get you pulled over.

Also look into a wiring harness to protect your car's stock wiring.

gl

p.s.  I did not put any time into researching anything I wrote... just writing off memory when i did the research myself way back... so my apologies if any of the info i have stated is slightly off.

the brightest hid you are going to buy is going to be 5600k, but the closest they have to that is going to be 6000k.  its as close as your going to get to a BMW style brightness and color.

agreed... anything higher in the kelvin scale is rice, anything lower just starts looking white (or yellow if you go all the way down to 3000k... which is the brightest may i add).

Don't go any higher then 6k, after that your not going to see much on the road which is more important then looks after all. You also might want to do some research on other people who have put HID's into stock Altima housings. Biggest problem with putting them in housings that were meant for halogens is beam scatter. It's really bright and will blind oncoming drivers. I saw a set in a Dodge Stratus and it was really bad.

I used to have those blue tinted halogen lights in my spec v to have that HID look, but they will never look like true HID's. Plus they never lasted very long and I drove around with one headlight way too much, they are really cheap and a waste of money in my opinion.

You may also have to point your headlight housing more down at the road to be curtious to other drivers (adjustment is easy).

Sounds like an easy mod! There is a vendor on the nissanclub.com site that is selling a Hellios Kit for sale for about 250$ US. He states that it's an easy install and he has some awesome reviews so I think it's a good deal to go with that seller. What do you guys think?

Good price for the kit, if lot's of other people are saying good things about them then I'd say go for it.

On a side note, this Altima's is nice...

That it is! If only my car could look and ride like that! If it could bring me a trophy too I wouldn't mind but for now, I'm happy with my baby. I'll go body work happy in a year or so if I feel like it!
